Rise Against Racism
Stand Up. Speak Out. Stop Racism.
Racism is unfair treatment, discrimination, or prejudice directed at someone because of their race, skin colour, culture, or ethnic background. It can be both individual (through actions or words) and systemic (built into policies, practices, and institutions).
What Racism Looks Like
-
Individual Racism – Occurs when a person’s beliefs, words, or actions show prejudice or discrimination toward others because of race. It happens in daily interactions and personal behaviour.
-
Institutional Racism – Takes place within organisations through policies, rules, or practices that unfairly disadvantage certain racial groups. It can appear in schools, workplaces, or government systems.
-
Structural/Systemic Racism – Built into society over time, where interconnected institutions like education, housing, health, and justice combine to create persistent racial inequalities.
-
Internalised Racism – Happens when people from marginalised groups absorb and accept harmful racial stereotypes, leading them to undervalue themselves or their community.
